Why do we hear more about dogs and chocolate?

Why is chocolate toxic to cats?

Chocolate contains two substances dangerous to a cat's body:

• theobromine;
• caffeine.

A cat's body has great difficulty eliminating these substances, and they can severely affect the nervous system, heart, and liver.

The darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine and the greater the risk.

Baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the most dangerous.

What should you do if your cat ate chocolate?

• When did it eat the chocolate?

• Approximately how much did it consume?

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning

Signs can appear several hours after ingestion.

Be alert if you notice:

• rapid breathing;
• muscle tremors;
• muscle rigidity;
• hyperactivity;
• vomiting;
• diarrhea;
• seizures, in severe cases.

These symptoms require immediate veterinary assistance.

What about white chocolate?

Many believe that white chocolate is safe because it does not contain the same amount of cocoa.

The reality is that it is not recommended either.

It may contain traces of caffeine and theobromine, and a cat's body is very sensitive even to small amounts.

In addition, it contains a lot of sugar and fat, which can cause other digestive problems.

Therefore, no type of chocolate is safe for cats.

What other foods are toxic to cats?

In addition to chocolate, there are other foods you should avoid:

• onion;
• garlic;
• grapes and raisins;
• alcohol;
• coffee;
• tea;
• avocado;
• macadamia nuts;
• raw dough with yeast;
• xylitol (sweetener present in many sugar-free products).

If you are unsure whether a food is safe for your cat, it is best to ask your veterinarian.

The best reward for a cat is not human food
